Yokosuka Museum of Art

Our oldest daughter considers herself to be quite the artist. So we've been meaning to take her to an art museum for some time now. We finally picked a Saturday to go and decided to try our luck at the Yokosuka Museum of Art. It's a very easy drive from the naval base in Yokosuka and is facing the beautiful Tokyo Bay.

Hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm

April 29th through May 5th : 10:00am to 8:00pm

Closed the first Monday of each month (except when it falls on a public holiday) and during New Years (December 29 through January 3).

Admission fees: Adults 300Y, High-school/College/Senior citizens 200Y, Junior High and younger FREE

Parking: Parking is available from 8:00am until 10:00pm and is free for the first hour with admission. After the first hour, parking is 150Y for 30 minutes (with a daily maximum of 1500Y). 

There is a small museum shop and an Italian restaurant looking out onto the bay. 

The museum is a work of art itself.

The weekend that we decided to go, the museum was having a special exhibition of children's art. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was to find this. The very first time our daughters visit an art museum, they are welcomed with displays of art by other children! They really enjoyed looking at the tables full of crafts - especially crafts made with recycled materials.

The top floor of the museum was the special exhibit (the children's art) and the lower floor houses their more permanent collection. It's not a very large museum, but if you have young children, that can be a plus. We were in and out in about an hour (yay for free parking!) and as we were leaving, I asked Thing1 how she liked her first visit to an art museum. She replied, "It was wonderful!"

And for roughly $8.00 for a family of four, I'd have to agree with her.
